Chennai has just the right climate and geography to inspire a night out on the cocktails. In the city, there are some excellent options - from rooftop terraces to intimate nooks where you'll want to get cosy with a good friend and a martini. Alternatively, head to the local beaches. At Marina and Elliot's, you'll find a diverse array of bars, many of which boast perfect views. It's time to book a Chennai hotel and start planning your trip!
As the name suggests, High (636, Anna Salai, Teynampet) delivers drinks with a view. Not just any view, but one afforded by the rooftop of one of Chennai's tallest buildings. While sipping on your cosmopolitan or margarita, enjoy a bird's eye take on the skyline. It's definitely a deliciously tranquil break from Chennai's often hot, hectic streets. The team is made up of friendly, knowledgeable, award-winning bartenders, who deliver reliable versions of the classics, as well as an ever-changing selection of imaginative original creations.
For yet another view, the Q Bar (124/1, J.N. Salai, Guindy) is recommended. Not only does the position offer breathtaking views of Chennai, it also features its very own pool. So, as far as summertime cocktail experiences in the city go, it's hard to beat. Prices are a little more expensive than in other places, but, at least they're reflected in the high quality and swish service. Casual dress is acceptable, don't feel as though you have to wear your best evening gown.
The intimate Lexus Bar (#62, (Old #41), Thirumalai Pillai Road, T. Nagar) offers a laidback atmosphere and warm service. It might not have the view of High or Q Bar, but it does offer a no-nonsense, authentic atmosphere. It's certainly the place to go if you're looking for somewhere to relax. You'll be made to feel totally comfortable kicking back in the big, roomy chairs with your favourite cocktail and your travelling companions. It's a great place for an intimate chat.
The Cheroot Malt and Cigar Lounge
If you like your drink in a stylish, sophisticated atmosphere, The Cheroot Malt and Cigar Lounge (63 Mount Road, Guindy) should be your destination. Think plush couches, commodious decor and super-efficient service. It's not unlike stepping into a film set from the 1930s. There's a wide variety of cocktails on the menu (the Chola Special is especially recommended), so if you're travelling in a group, you'll find there's something for everyone.
Hitting the beaches
Before or after your city cocktail bar hop, take some time to check out Chennai's beach culture. As you may know, the city's coastline is known for its stunning beauty, so you can enjoy a beverage or several with some rather amazing views - and even a before or after swim. Don't forget to take your swimmers with you! The busiest, most interesting places for night-life are Marina Beach and Elliot's Beach. There are a variety of bars, cafes and restaurants. Leave yourself a few hours to explore, and have the ultimate beach side cocktail adventure!
